About the project

Yandin Wind Farm, a RATCH Australia Corporation (RAC) and Alinta Energy investment, managed by Alinta Energy. When opened it produced more renewable energy than any other wind farm in WA, using 51 4.2MW turbines supplied by global manufacturer Vestas. The turbines have a hub height of 105 metres to maximise performance in the site’s specific wind conditions.

With a capacity factor of around 50 per cent, Yandin powers the equivalent of approximately 200,000 households across Western Australia each year.

The wind farm connects to Western Power’s 330 kV electricity South West Interconnected System (SWIS) network via a new 10 kilometre transmission line and terminal station – built, owned, and operated by Western Power.

In 2021, the turbines were among the biggest ever installed in Australia. At their highest point, the tip blades reach 180m into the air, and the rotor diameter is 150m. Despite their size, the turbines only occupy around 0.03 per cent of the project site, meaning farming and existing land uses can co-exist. Lease agreements with the landowners allow the farmers to continue their normal activities, whether grazing or cropping.

During construction the project boosted the local economy with more than 150 jobs and engaged 19 local businesses. In addition, up to a dozen operational staff are based in Dandaragan in the long-term.
