TOWNSVILLE POWER STATION

About the project

The Townsville Power Station is a gas fired power station located in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It has two generating units with a total capacity of 242 megawatts, and it is owned and operated by RATCH-Australia. Townsville Power Station is a Siemens combined cycle plant with 1 gas turbine and 1 steam turbine. The output of the gas turbine is connected to the 132kV Powerlink electrical network and the steam turbine output is connected to the Ergon 66kV network.

Siemens combined gas turbine (CGT) power plants are power generation systems that use a combination of gas and steam turbines to efficiently convert natural gas into electricity. The heart of the system is the gas turbine, which is a type of internal combustion engine that uses a mixture of fuel and air to produce rotational energy. The gas turbine is connected to a generator, which converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The hot exhaust gases from the gas turbine are then used to heat water in a heat exchanger, creating steam that is directed to a steam turbine. The steam turbine is connected to a generator and generates additional electricity from the heat energy in the steam.

The CGT power plants offered by Siemens are characterized by their high efficiency, flexibility and fast start-up times. They are suitable for base load, peak load and load-following operation, making them ideal for a wide range of applications including power generation, combined heat and power (CHP) and co-generation. They are also designed to meet the latest emissions standards and to reduce the environmental impact of power generation.

The Townsville Power Station supplies electricity to the National Electricity Market (NEM) and is an important contributor to the energy supply in Queensland. The gas fired power station was fully operational in 1999. The power station has undergone several upgrades and refurbishments over the years to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. In 2005 a redevelopment increased the capacity of the power station to 242MW.
