As the first ‘utility-scale’ wind farm in the state of Queensland, Windy Hill Wind Farm is a significant landmark in the state’s renewable energy journey.
Technically Windy Hill is the second wind farm to be constructed in Queensland, after the single 0.45Mw turbine began operations on Thursday Island in 1997.
The 20 turbines are 44 metres (144 ft) high which each generate 12 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 3,500 homes.
Completed in 2000, Windy Hill was is strategically located near Ravenshoe, the highest town in the state, and as the name suggests, benefits from the very windy conditions.
The turbines are located on a mix of private land which continues to be used as a dairy farm.
