About the project

RATCH Australia Corporation (RAC) is proposing to develop the El Arish Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) (the Project) located approximately 2.5 kilometres (km) east of the township of El Arish in the Cassowary Coast region in Far North Queensland.

The Project is anticipated to include a 200 MW (megawatt) BESS with a 800 MWh (megawatt hours) capacity, or four hours of storage.

Located within the rural zone under the Cassowary Coast Planning Scheme (Planning Scheme), the investigation area is approximately 35 hectares (ha) with the BESS expected to have a development footprint of approximately 5.5 ha.

Construction and operation of the Project would involve the following key components:

  • 200 MW BESS, including battery containers and inverters with integrated cooling and fire suppressions systems
  • Switchyard and substation
  • New access road to the site
  • Water tank(s) for bushfire fighting purposes
  • Overhead or underground lines to connect into the existing electrical network
  • Security cameras
  • Internal access tracks
  • Perimeter security fencing
  • Parking, site office and amenities for operational use.
