Beginning of operationsKemerton Power Station (KPS) plays a vital role in securing Western Australia’s power supply, as one of three “black start” facilities used to restart of the energy supply system.
As a dispatchable generator, it is supporting Western Australia’s transition to clean energy by supporting the operation of intermittent wind and solar generation.
KPS provides a critical System Restart Ancillary Service (SRAS) when the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) experiences a major disruption or a System Black event.
Once activated in a Black Start scenario, KPS’s gas turbines energise the transmission system, helping restart major power stations such as Muja, Pinjarra, and Collie, and restoring grid stability.
The station has two 155 MW gas turbines, generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of up to 57,735 homes.
Licensing changes introduced in 2024 now allow for more flexible operations—up to 13,800 hours per year—enabling RAC to better support Western Australia’s transition away from thermal generation and ensure a stable, reliable electricity supply.
KPS began operations in 2005. It uses natural gas as its primary fuel to generate electricity, which is sold to Synergy and then distributed across the Western Australian grid. The natural gas is supplied to KPS via a 4.94 km lateral pipeline connected to the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
