KEMERTON POWER STATION

About the project

Kemerton Power Station is a natural gas-fired power station located in Kemerton, Western Australia. The power station uses natural gas as a fuel source to generate electricity, which is then distributed to the Western Australian grid.

In June 2008, a 40MW upgrade to Kemerton Power Station was completed, increasing its capacity to 310MW. The upgrade has made the power station more efficient and improved its environmental rating by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while providing power for an additional 10,000 households.

Kemerton helps secure the power supply to Western Australia through the addition in 2018 of four diesel generators with a total capacity of 7.2MW which can be called on to independently restart a gas turbine in case of total blackout. Once started (Black Start) these generators will then be used to energise the transmission system, which would then be used to restart other major power stations such as Muja, Pinjarra and Collie and restabilise the grid. This will then be used to restart other power stations in the South West Interconnected System.

Gas is supplied to the Kemerton Power Station via a 4.94 km lateral branch from the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline. When gas is not available, the power station can also operate on fuel oil.

It is independently estimated that Kemerton has a remaining life of 20yrs, with a 2040 asset end.
