Major construction activities commenced in May 2019 and were completed in October 2020.
The first task was to upgrade the access road to the site, Lerida Road South, which was completed November 2019. Construction of the substation for the project started in September 2019. Work on the turbine foundations began in November 2019, prior to the wind turbines components arriving. Components of the turbines began arriving on site in March 2020, with the last delivered in September 2020.
Each of the wind farm’s 54 turbines comprise three tower sections, three blades, a hub to connect the blades to the tower and a nacelle, which houses the generator.
In April 2020 the wind turbines started to be erected and the wind farm generated its first clean power in November 2020. Commissioning of the wind farm began in February 2021. Commercial operations commenced in June 2021.
The main challenge for the build was the access to the site as the original road was only used by local farmers and needed a lot of upgrading. The other main challenge for the construction was that it was conducted throughout the pandemic. This meant that there were supply chain issues and the safety of the workforce had to be managed closely.
Vestas Australian Wind Technology managed all construction works, with support from major subcontractors: Symal, civil subcontractors, RJE electrical subcontractor and UGL assisted Transgrid with the electrical and civil work on the sub station.
There are a number of conditions in the development approval that needed to be finalised before construction could start on site. Some required additional review and approval from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry & Environment.
